Description:
Large, mostly dark with rather small pale head, longish and deep bill, fairly long neck, and ample rounded tail. Adult has pale head and neck, dark brown upperwing and underwing, and mainly white tail with broad black terminal band. Juvenile less bulky, looks slimmer-winged, longer-tailed and smaller-billed.
Distribution:
Rare resident along the Indus River in Diamer and Skardu districts, exact range unknown. Found in open country rivers, lakes, marshes, freshwater wetlands and pools; often in arid areas or steppe. From lowlands up to 2500m.
Behavior:
Fish caught near surface, without plunge, often in shallows or when stranded in drying pools; alternatively taken as carrion; also steals from other raptors, Great Cormorants and other birds, even terns. Mainly hunts medium to large fish; also water birds, rodents, lagomorphs, frogs, reptiles, insects, offal and carrion.
